Day 1, 18th of April 2017 – Facebook’s annual F8 Conference was filled with enhancing the present. Day 2, 19thof April 2017 was all about fixing the vision for the future. On the 2ndday, in the opening keynote, Facebook’s CTO Mike Schroepfer talked about the goal to develop technology that will assist everyone build a global community. Moreover, he stated about the new goal of the company that is to “build and ship new, category-defining consumer products that are social first, at scale.”
Schroepfer along with other keynote speakers —Director of Applied Machine Learning, Joaquin Quiñonero Candela; Director of Connectivity Programs, Yael Maguire; Vice President of Engineering and Building 8 Regina Dugan and Chief Scientist of Oculus Research, Michael Abrash; shared updates and visions for the long-term future focus areas.
Virtual Reality and Social Media
Facebook showcased a video that explained how they’re developing a new technology to enable users to interact with real-world environments making use of a VR avatar.
Augmented Reality
Facebook’s Chief Scientist Michael Abrash talked about transparent glasses that will be proficient of overlaying virtual images on the real world. Abrash firmly believes AR technology has a great potential and one can enhance almost every aspect of people’s lives.
Artificial Intelligence
Facebook’s applied machine learning team is now running 50x more AI experiments per day than were a year ago, examining the capability of technology in a wide range of areas to develop the user experience.
Improved Connectivity
Fb’s connectivity lab explained about how they’re developing new technology solutions to “connect the unconnected and enhance the experience of the underserved”.
Building 8
It’s a project to focus on silent speech communications. Facebook is working on a system, which will let people type with their brains at 100 words per minute, straight from the speech center of your brain. Its 5x faster than you can type on your smart phone today.
